Word of the Week: Education
As an experienced videographer with more than 30 years of work on my CV, I can say my transition to Legal Video was quite educational. In 2016, I was asked to cover a deposition as a favor to some great folks I know in my home city of Richmond, Virginia.
At that time, I was the lead videographer for a special Oral History Project for the School of Education at the University of Virginia called “Teachers in the Movement”- was led by Dr. Derrick Alridge, Ph.D.
I assumed that with all of my knowledge and education, both collegiate and practical, I would not have any issues with covering a deposition. How hard could it be?
Well, 10 years later, let me say that there was so much I did not know. Even now, I am still learning. As a CLVS, I have pivoted from my full time focus on Oral History Preservation to Legal Video. The challenge of the job and the weight of the responsibility are the driving factors; however, there is also this component of “Continuing Education” that is quietly helping me to stay young - mentally.
With each assignment I receive, today, I embrace the challenge of knowing what is needed, what tools are required and what the expectations are of me from my clients.
What’s my point? Well, the point is simple: embrace learning new things, growing and expanding your capabilities and building your confidence. With this state of mind not only will you feel great about having new tools in your toolkit, you will, by default, increase your value as a working professional.
Stay focused, stay informed and grow your value!
